African-American (Black-American) Heritage Flag

The Black American Heritage Flag was designed in 1967 by Melvin Charles and Gleason T. Jackson during a time when Black identity, pride, and self-definition were at the forefront of social change.

Each element of the flag carries meaning. The red represents the blood shed in the struggle for freedom and equality. The black stands for the people—their strength, resilience, and enduring legacy. At the center, a golden sword surrounded by a wreath symbolizes justice, self-determination, and the victories achieved through resistance.

The flag was created to give Black Americans a unifying symbol—one that reflects a shared history and cultural identity rooted in both struggle and achievement. While it isn’t as widely recognized as national flags, its message remains powerful and relevant.

It serves as a reminder of how far the journey has come—and how important it is to preserve and honor that history.
